Old Town
Enjoy the hustle and bustle of the Venetian Harbour of Chania which is 10 minutes walk from Melina Apartments; stroll along the pedestrian streets of the Old Town and shop for souvenirs, arts and crafts. There are two good museums : the newbuilt Archaeological Museum of Chania and the Maritime Museum of Crete. The historical town of Chania within centuries-old fortifications and built amphitheatrically around its picturesque old harbour, throughout the centuries it has been under Roman, Arab, Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish rule, is always full of life. The animated discussions on the terraces lining the waterfront, and the arrival of the first fishermen with the traditional caiques creates a unique scenery. It is a place where you could easily spend two or three days wondering around the quite narrow, streets, with boutiques and art shops, cafés and restaurants which are usually bustling with life .
West of the city of Chania there are amazing beaches which you can explore other by car other by bus. Nea Chora, Kalamaki, Agia Marina and Platanias are the nearest. Falasarna, Elafonissi are all on the West Coast of the Island with breathtaking beauty.
The whole prefecture of Chania has amazing Gorges which is the hiking paradise for any hiker. Samarias Gorge is famous. It is the longest and also one of the most beautiful gorges in Europe. The walk through it takes around six hours, it is best to go with a guide who will also organize the transfers. There are other gorges too, which are generally quieter and less demanding. The Agia Irini Gorge (7.5 km from the village of Agia Irini to Sougia) and the Gorge of Imbros (8 km from the village of Imbros to Komitades as well as the Gorge of Aradena for experienced hikers (7.5 km from the village of Aradena to Marmara).
